The Kipling Garages scheme – which is still currently being considered by Southwark Council’s planners – follows in the footsteps of other SE1 schemes that have been recognised in the Awards over the years, from Empire Square in 2007, through the Iroko and Coin Street developments (2002 & 1995) right back to Perronet House in 1971.

This shortlisting recognises the tremendous work done by residents from the Leathermarket area in designing and shaping the scheme, supported by professionals from Bell Phillips Architects and igloo Regeneration. Southwark Council will be funding the development of 27 homes as part of their commitment to build 11,000 new council homes across the borough.

Leathermarket CBS Chair John Paul Maytum MBE said:

“It is wonderful to see the quality of the plans for Kipling Garages recognised in this way and is a tribute to the countless hours put in by resident volunteers and professionals to get the best new development we can for the Kipling Estate.

“This goes to show that low cost homes for those in housing need can still be delivered to the highest standards, providing places to live that residents can have a lasting pride in.

“I’m looking forward to getting the final details worked through with Southwark Council so we can get going on these homes and new residents moved in as soon as possible.”
